| A development plan instituted a phased refurbishment and modernisation of residential accommodation in all of the older courts. Our work also included the refurbishment of the Porters’ Lodge and the Master’s Lodge, extension of the Kitchen Yard and Catering Manager’s Offices, a new fitness centre, conversion of the Merton Arms into accommodation for graduate students and the creation of two graduate hostels. | |

Most of the work was to Grade I listed buildings. A notable exception being the new-build Pound Hill hostel creating a series of arresting roofs that add interest to its location (£0.25m, 1990). Click on the map to view a larger plan of our work at the College. |
| Pound Hill Hostel: | |
| This student hostel for St John's College provides ten bedsitting rooms with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities for graduates. The building is situated on the eastern edge of the city conservation area beyond the bounds Main College. The building is designed to be self-contained as graduates remain in Cambridge to work during College vacation periods. | |

| The plan form and section of the new building was developed directly from within the constraints of this extremely tight and overlooked site. Consultation with adjoining residents also formed an important part of the design process and their co-operation was essential to the ultimate success of the project. | |
| The building demonstrates the practice's belief that a combination of high quality natural materials, simple detailing and good workmanship produces light, elegant and durable structures despite comparatively low cost limits. | |
