Tetovo is Macedonia's second city with a population of around ninety thousand and built at the base of the Sar Mountain. It prides itself on being one of the educational centres of the country boasting two universities.

Its architecture is extremely varied, generally mid-rise concrete constructions and mostly of poor quality. Tetovo suffers from urban sprawl and a largely unregulated building industry.

We were asked to provide a high quality architectural vision for the city centre, currently a poor and neglected space of brutal soviet architecture, that would act as a catalyst for a future of high quality living, a centre for municipal buildings and public spaces.

Two proposals were put forward for the revitalisation of the square; one based on a high rise development to be mostly privately financed and the second of low rise to be publicly financed.

The schemes were presented to the City in May 2011. Reactions have been positive and dialogue with legislative bodies and commercial investors is ongoing.
