arts theatre auditorium
[hi-res version with enlargable images]
The refurbishment and extension of the Cambridge Arts Theatre took place over four phases between January 1993 and November 1996 at a cost of £6.5 million.
section through theatre The work involved a rebuilt auditorium, deeper stage, higher fly tower, 75% more dressing rooms and much enlarged backstage areas.

The new building is over one and a half times as big as its predecessor on the same site.

Public access was transformed with linked foyers, a lift and a co-ordinated strategy for disabled users. There was also an expanded and modernised catering organisation with more kitchens, restaurants and bars and centralised offices.

Throughout, it was our aim to subordinate the mass of new services and equipment to a careful preservation of an intimate and informal scale, best exemplified by the new auditorium.
