| The refurbishment and extension of the Cambridge Arts Theatre took place over four phases between January 1993 and November 1996 at a cost of £6.5 million. | |

The work involved a rebuilt auditorium, deeper stage, higher fly tower, 75% more dressing rooms and much enlarged backstage areas. The new building is over one and a half times as big as its predecessor on the same site. |
| Public access was transformed with linked foyers, a lift and a co-ordinated strategy for disabled users. There was also an expanded and modernised catering organisation with more kitchens, restaurants and bars and centralised offices. | |
| Throughout, it was our aim to subordinate the mass of new services and equipment to a careful preservation of an intimate and informal scale, best exemplified by the new auditorium.
